The afternoon sun warmed our backs as we sped through the Holbeck streets. After quite a long ride, Trigger pulled his cycle up outside The Boston Bean.

I could smell the scent of donuts in the air along with the delicious aroma of fresh brewed coffee.

Trigger scanned the entire area, his eyes flitting around, taking in every face he passed, worried that we’d find ourselves in trouble.

I felt the holster of my gun shift underneath my blouse while I patted my pockets to make sure I brought my badge with me. I can’t be waltzing around Holbeck without identification or my firearm. Who knows what Chiellini has planned.

“They’ve got a special. One free coffee with any Boston cream donut. I should grab us some,” Trigger said.

“Can you not think about your stomach right now? We’re here to find Eddie.”

“What? You’re off-duty and I’m not exactly the friends-with-the-cop type. Might as well grab something to blend in, huh?” he asked, pointing to his leather jacket and tattoo sleeves.

“Alright. Donuts it is.” I laughed.

The inside of the café was quaint with its warm brown walls and marble tiles. There were old-school booths and tables lining the wall with golden chandeliers shining down on each one. Exactly the kind of place I would’ve loved to spend my afternoon, going over my case notes or stopping in for a moment to breathe while canvassing the area.

I realized how much I missed being in the field, how I wanted nothing more than to head back to work and do something that felt right. I worried I wouldn’t ever be able to function the way I used to, or when the time came for action, all I’d do is freeze. I shook it off, focusing on the woman behind the register while Trigger and I waited in line.

Trigger went ahead and ordered two donuts and coffee.

I waited for the other barista to head towards the back room. The last thing I wanted was to cause a scene. I approached her, fishing for my badge in my pocket, holding it up right before she vanished inside. “Excuse me, Detective Mandy Shepherd with the HPD. Can I ask you a few questions about a coworker of yours?”

The woman shifted around nervously. Her chocolate brown hair slicked back into a low bun and her bright blue eyes were striking. She nodded, swallowing hard while we moved away from the crowd of people waiting for their caffeine fix. “What is this about?”

“I’m trying to get in touch with Eddie Valastro. He has information that’s pertinent to a case I’ve been working on. Is he scheduled to work today?” I asked.

“Eddie hasn’t been into work for a couple of days. We’ve all tried to call him, but he hasn’t answered. Erica went down to his place yesterday to check on him, but there was no sign of him there either.”

“Is this something he usually does? Disappear like this?”

“No, never. He’s always on time. Never missed a shift,” she asserted.
